K11 Mall- a place where Science meets with Art; and People meet with Nature

HONG KONG – 18 December, 2009 – K11, the first mall developed by New World Development Company and Urban Renewal Authority has some very distinctive architectural lighting fixtures and art collections to symbolize its unique presence in the heart of Tsimshatsui, Hong Kong.

Making use of its prominent height amongst all other buildings in nearby area, the rooftop signage stands out from the crowds to declare its names and presence during the night time.  And with an enhancement program to intensify the existing façade lighting systems and color options, one can now easily catch the sight of the building from the Tsimshatsui waterfront, and also at the other side of the Victoria Harbor.

The mall decor itself is also an attraction to visitors.  Right at the time you enter into the main entrance at Mody Road and move into the K11 Piazza, the gigantic curved video wall and high definition LED TV wall immediately capture your attention.  Being the largest curved LED wall in Asia, it constantly features greeneries and natural scenic images such as rainforest, tropical flowers and waterfalls with whisper of birds.  The place seems like a natural oasis in the middle of a concrete forest.  People can sip a cup of coffee; watch the latest information or live-feed news on the TV wall; and feel great and relaxed in the heart of the Tsimshatsui district.  In here, lighting and audio visual systems live in perfect harmony with the architecture to generate a surprisingly tranquil atmosphere.

When you continuously navigate into the ground floor of the shopping mall, you will find two touch-screen directories housed in two wooden sculptures which are designed for providing total different information and virtual experience.  While the Art Directory is to display art concepts as well as current and upcoming exhibitions in the mall, the other is a comprehensive Shopping Directory equipped with both 2.5 dimensional and 3 dimensional virtual walk-through to guide visitors through to the chosen shops and destinations.

As you make your way to the toilet on the first floor, the split-screen LED fixtures have already been waiting to amaze you in the sitting area.  Videos of marine life, wave movement and natural wonders just continue looping on the four LED panels to provide a refreshing feeling of nature. The mall never stops to impress you with a complete visual palette of sensations.

Escalating to the second and third floors, the waterfall projected on the transparent lobby elevators surely will cool down a bit of your shopping excitement and discoveries so far.  With three projectors setting at different floors, the synchronized effect of moving water helps to create a soft and gentle ambience for shopping and dining at the upper levels of the mall.

If your visual sensation still has not been fully awakened, leaving the mall through the 24-hour passageway can certainly cheer your senses in a natural way as the swimming marine creatures on the ceiling; ocean water, winds and trees from the LED walls say hi and bye to you.

Lightscape Technologies is so grateful to have the opportunity in helping the property developer put together all these lighting concepts/solutions and build a new landmark in the rejuvenated area of Tsimshatsui, Hong Kong.  The K11 Art mall was officially launched as the grand opening ceremony took place on 17 December.  Mr Bondy Tan, the CEO of Lightscape Technologies is delighted to announce that their missions have been fully accomplished.

“The involvement of Lightscape in this mega project can be dated back to June 2008 when we were first appointed as LED lighting consultant for such first-of-a-kind development.  We were told at the conceptual stage that the mall will be shaped up as a high-end, youthful, vibrant rendezvous not only to provide unique shopping experience, but also to serve as a platform for people to mingle with different cultures; and to appreciate art and nature” explained Mr Bondy Tan. “We found the project was so different from other lighting projects that we have done before and working behind an extremely art based concept presented a great challenge to us.  And now we see that we had successfully put all these different elements together and come up with an integral lighting solution that balances and fulfills all the requirements in both artistic and scientific sense.  The great feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment is just beyond words” he added.

K11 is one of the largest urban renewal projects undertaken in Hong Kong by New World Development and the Urban Renewal Authority. The development comprises a public open space of over 1,200 square metre at ground level; a shopping space of over 30,000 square metre to accommodate hundreds of fashion and life style shops; food & beverage outlets as well as a prestige hotel and luxurious apartments.
